SAI, a Mead & Hunt Company, worked with the City of Falls Church in Virginia to identify and initiate a bridge inspection program. Prior to 2013 the City had not performed any inspections of the bridge and culvert crossings in the jurisdiction. SAI, a Mead & Hunt Company, was selected to assist the City in creating a sustainable bridge inspection program. SAI, a Mead & Hunt Company, identified and recorded GPS coordinates, structure type/material, span length/opening size, structure width, and general condition. SAI, a Mead & Hunt Company, created a spreadsheet file with the obtained information, classified each structure as NBI or Non-NBI, and recommended inspection frequency for each structure based on NBIS and VDOT criteria. SAI, a Mead & Hunt Company, acted as the Program Manager on behalf of the City of Falls Church in multiple meetings with VDOT to begin the initial inspections. SAI, a Mead & Hunt Company, performed the initial inspections and introduced City personnel to the bridge inventory in the field including project managers, design engineers, and maintenance personnel. SAI, a Mead & Hunt Company, recommended repair items that the City maintenance forces could complete and items that would need to be included in a larger scale repair contract. SAI, a Mead & Hunt Company, provided guidance on frequency and cost for performing the maintenance items discussed as well as comprehensive maintenance guides from other jurisdictions. SAI, a Mead & Hunt Company, developed inspection reports that met NBIS and VDOT standards. SAI, a Mead & Hunt Company, compiled a master list of all the repair recommendations and worked with the City’s project manager to prioritize the repairs while considering the funds available from the available budget. SAI, a Mead & Hunt Company, performed the 2015 annual inspections of the NBI structures that required a 12 month inspection frequency and performed the initial inspection of the Non-NBI structures. With the initial cycle of inspections completed, SAI, a Mead & Hunt Company, is working with the City to make long term projections for inspection, maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation costs.
