US 29 Corridor Mobility Study

SAI, a Mead & Hunt Company, was tasked with evaluating the feasibility of a managed lane network (Bus Rapid Transit and HOV) along US 29 from the Howard County line to downtown Silver Spring.

Work Efforts included:

  • Compilation / collection of existing transportation data including intersection and daily traffic counts, lane by lane utilization, signal timing, vehicle occupancy, bus routes and stops and bus ridership
  • Evaluated opening year traffic operations
  • Considered multiple scenarios including buses and right turns, buses and right turns and HOV2+, buses and right turns and HOV3+
  • Evaluated person throughput
  • Evaluated transit travel time improvements
  • Performed Synchro and VISSIM traffic simulation
  • Developed alternatives, concept designs, and costs to improve traffic operations under a managed lane condition
  • Presented findings to DOT leadership, and MTA and SHA stakeholders
  • Prepared technical memorandum documenting methodology and findings
  • Prepared cost-benefit analysis in support of a winning $10 Million TIGER Grant
